About 5 years ago, my husband and I wanted to pull out our old backyard, put in a pool and planters. We interviewed 3 companies, Mother Magnolia was one of them. From the beginning, Tom was the only honest one and told us, realistically, what we could and couldn't do based on the oak trees surrounding our property. We had to adjust our expectations to what we were allowed to do based on what Pasadena's codes allowed.
We worked with Tom to get as much as we could. His crew was awesome, especially when we were checking in ever single day. They would make minor changes to get us what we wanted. They helped us, when we added to the project, find the contractors to get our projects done. The cost is never going to make anyone smile, but it wasn't outlandish and we feel we got what we paid for. The final product was exactly what we wanted. And five years later, I'd do it all again! I still love it and use the pool (or spool) year round. Tom is the best!

I would like to share my poor experience with Mother Magnolia so that others hopefully won't go down the same road. In a nutshell, I hired Mother Magnolia and worked with Tom Scoble, who is the president/owner, to build an in-ground pool and pool bathroom in my backyard. In the end, Mother Magnolia did not build a bathroom for me because they wanted to raise the price. Tom accused my wife and me of asking for too many "upgrades." But even when we asked him to build the bathroom without the upgrades, for the original price, he refused.
In addition, we ran into problems with Mother Magnolia's workmanship--leaking spa wall, leaking plantar wall, unexpected gas line problems--that either cost us more or took a long time for Tom to address. Yelp will not give me enough characters to give you all the details, but my two-cents are the following: Here is Mother Magnolia run by Tom Scoble, who is an articulate, seemingly friendly guy, who appears to have quite a bit of experience. Yet, when problems do arise, it seems like we fall back on the same contractor games.
And Tom will dismiss your problems and weasel out of his responsibilities. With so many other contractors out there, why take the risk with Mother Magnolia? I certainly won't be using them again and would never recommend them to a friend. But if you do decide to roll the dice with them, just make sure EVERYTHING is in writing and do not be a nice guy.

The level of arrogance and customer service from Tom, the owner of the company, was totally appalling. He seemed nice when he came out to look over our yard to place a bid. Once we got the quote I asked for some follow up information, like how many square feet of sod he was quoting me for, why there seemed to be an extra valve installation than what we had discussed, and basic price information on the products he was quoting.
The email back was that he had never been asked for this information in 13 years of business and his quote was final- no additional info would be given and to let him know if they could be of service. I'm in sales for a living so I know the repercussions of not asking questions. I just asked for a little more information on how he came to the price he did and I got a level of treatment that I would never expect from any company- especially one bidding for a $12,000 landscaping job at my house. Unbelievable!
