My journey in the swimming pool business began in 1992. I was broke and needed to pay rent and found a part-time job cleaning pools for a wonderful couple managing Premier Pools Service Department out of their home. We all quickly discovered that I was a natural and within six months I was invited by the owners at Premier to become a salesman in the expanding pool construction department. That didn't work out too well and I was transferred to the remodel department. That didn't work out either and all the while I was kicking and screaming and soon found myself back in the (now in-house) service department. I didn't realize it for years to come but thanks to the owner's insistence that I attend new construction and remodel sites, I had gained invaluable knowledge as to how pools are built, remodeled, the sales process, customer relations, and, my own maturity. Before long I was asked to manage the service department and in 1995 Premier Pools and Spas generously sold part of their service route to me.
On October 1, 1995 my business launched and with my need to constantly learn I devoured every swimming pool educational course I could find near and far. Within a few years I unexpectedly found other pool techs calling me for advice and demand for my services has consistently grown.
And, the second most asked question: How did I come up with the name Mike the Poolman ? Quite innocently- when I worked for Premier a few of our customers' children (now grown!) used to refer to me as "Mike the Pool man". It was fun and I went with it never realizing it would become as marketable or successful as it has.Years later my simple philosophy remains the same: do what's best for the customer and business will thrive.

Ray Pak Versa Swimming Pool and Spa heater leaking from a compromised copper heat exchanger. This is almost certainly a result of poor (corrosion ) water chemistry.
Pool rebar corrosion causes rebar bleed & stain
A total breakdown in swimming pool construction led to: a) poorly placed rebar by the steel subcontractor with rebar sticking up too high. b) the gunite company is negligent for allowing rebar to remain as high as it is AND for applying gunite without full coverage c) the plaster company somehow made the decision to plaster over exposed rebar sticking through gunite !!

Swimming Pool Filter Leak at band clamp
I found this swimming pool filter leaking because the person who cleaned the filter last didn't secure the band clamp tight enough. You can also see that the bolt is bent. Fortunately the lid didn't explode off and hurt anyone. I repaired the filter by replacing the tank o-ring and installing a new band clamp assembly.

Pool water features increase evaporation and chlorine demand
Swimming pool water features (waterfalls, spillways, sheer descents, laminars, etc) expose more water to the sun and thus increase evaporation and chlorine demand (UV rays break down chlorine in the water). Turning off water features will SAVE WATER water by decreasing evaporation and will reduce chlorine demand.

Gas pool heater is leaking water out of its copper heat exchanger and into other components. The copper eroded due to aggressive water chemistry until the copper was so thin it gave way- and oh did it leak!!

I met Mike out at the Prairie City MTB races, and had heard good things about him, so I asked him if he could come over and take a look at an exposed re-bar issue in my pool. Mike came over and evaluated the rust damage, and provided me with an estimate. I didn't want to delay the work any further, as the rust and corrosion was only going to get worse.
After draining the pool the night before, Mike and his crew showed up at 7:30am as promised, and were done by 11am. The quality of the work was excellent, which made it easy to hire Mike for the next pool issue. My two-speed pool pump stopped working in high speed mode, which drove the water through our solar panels on the roof. I asked Mike about it, and he recommended a variable speed pump as a replacement, that could be programmed to minimize power usage not only during normal filtering, but also when running solar.
I had Mike go ahead and install, and program the new variable speed pump. While Mike was here, he noticed that my solar setup was all manual. He recommended some simple changes to convert it over to full automatic operation, and helped me save labor costs by doing some of the roof wiring myself. Bottom line, I had a great experience with Mike and would highly recommend him for any pool work.

We love Mike! He and his team provide fabulous care for our pool, but even more importantly, I completely trust him. He truly cares about his customers and treats them with honesty and integrity. He provided us exactly the guidance we needed when we were battling with a horrible controller that was installed as part of our solar heater, and now we have a much better controller that is easy to understand and use. He always goes above and beyond when taking care of customers. I would never replace him.

My wife and I consider ourselves fortunate to have Mike replace our old malfunctioning pump with a new energy saving variable speed pump. Much quieter and more power when needed. Mikes attention to detail throughout the job was great. He came back the next day as promised to follow up on some possible loose ends. Mike was great. I emailed him about coming out to fix my broken solar heater for the pool. He was booked up but took the time that evening to write me a response about something I could do myself to fix it since he was unavailable. Over an email he was able to diagnose my problem, I changed out a part, and now it works great.

A few years ago we called on Mike to come and repaired a crack (from a tree root), in our pool. So, when we needed a new pump, we called on him again remembering what great service he gave us. From start to finish, Mike got the job done very quickly. He installed a new pump and had several great suggestions for changes we are looking to do this year. Just had a great experience with Mike the Poolman. During the last storm our 2 speed pump went out trying to drain the pool. Finally upgraded to a variable speed pump. Mike was responsive, knowledgeable and prompt. Quickly replaced the old pump and trained us on the new one. Evaluated our existing equipment and made recommendations. Total no nonsense kind of guy. I am very happy with my experience with Mike the Poolman. He was responsive to my emails and went into depth to help me choose the rail ultimately installed in my pool. While there was a wait for the custom rail to be made and shipped to him, it was not an undue amount of time at all. Once he had the rail in stock, it was installed within a week. It was a quick, neat job from there and my father now has a good, stable means of support when exiting the pool. I highly recommend that you contact Mike the Poolman. He has good people working for him and is meticulous about making certain the job is done right.

Swimming pool hand rail installation. We needed to have a hand rail installed in our older pool. Mike was great, consistently responsive, he offered a clear and fair price, and was always punctual. He was especially helpful when we ran into a challenge in installing the hand rail due to the older nature of the brick surrounding the pool. Mike was unable to come out to our house as he is SO BUSY right now, but he answered our questions and walked us through the process of cleaning our pool impellor and it fixed the problem. He was the ONLY business (out of 5 that I called) who got back to me right away and didn't even charge us for his advice! When the time comes for replacements, Mike the Poolman will be who I will call!

As a new homeowner, I appreciated Mike teaching me the ropes and inspecting my system. The fee is reasonable, and everything is straight advice, not sales and marketing. I wanted a quieter waterfall pump, which he diagnosed as cavitation. He guaranteed the fix ($250 valve + labor) would address the noise, and it did. My wife even mentioned the improvement! I recently moved into a new home with a pool that had been neglected over the past few years, and needed advice on how to bring it back to life. I ended up having Mike install a new filter and variable speed pump. The equipment purchase was made through him, and along with labor, the price was incredibly fair. After the install, Mike gave me a full rundown on the new equipment, and provided several suggestions and advice on maintaining the pool. All in all I was very pleased with his professionalism and service. Will be calling him again if needed.

A week ago my JANDY pool pump all of the sudden just stopped running. In the past, when I experienced pool related problems, I was able to troubleshoot and fix the problem myself. This time however, all my pump associated equipment appeared to check out fine and I couldn't determine what the problem was. I was lost. I reluctantly called for help.
I was impressed with "Mike The Poolman" website. I contacted him via his business email and he responded back immediately. Throughout the course of the afternoon we exchanged emails regarding type and model of my pool equipment. Later while sitting in the bleachers at an evening Sac State Hornet baseball game, long after Mike's business closing hours, he emailed again requesting an over all view-photo of my pool equipment lay out.
The next morning Mike emailed and stated he would be out at my residence that day. He didn't let me down. He arrived early, appeared thoroughly familiar with my pool set up (guess photos help) and began working on my pool pump issue. Within short order he was able to quickly diagnose and correct the problem. While I was standing there watching Mike the pump started running and my pool water began circulating once again.
I couldn't express my gratitude enough. I had visions of my pool water turning green while waiting forever for parts. I was very pleased. Mike is the best! Top notch, head and shoulders above his competition. His technical expertise, professionalism in appearance and demeanor and his pride in his work is most apparent. Very highly recommended. 5 's.

I cannot say enough good things about Mike! We had him install a new pump and controller and he was upfront and honest every step of the way. He gave us lots of good options for our needs and the quality of work was top notch. Most importantly, I felt that Mike was one of the rare ones out there that truly knows his stuff. It's hard to come by people that are just willing to help these days, but Mike was eager to help and that's just plain awesome. I can't say enough good about Mike the Poolman. When he came to my house to evaluate my pool issue, he first did a thorough review of my pool physically, looked at my pool controller settings, made several recommendations to me about how to take care of my pool better, and adjusted my pool controller settings right there on the spot for me! Most importantly, he fixed my issue quickly and took great care in his work. Mike's very friendly and reasonable in his rates. Highly recommend!

My pool pump started to whine. Mike had been recommending I replace it for a few years, but I didn't want to spend the money. When it started going out I no longer had a choice. Mike recommended again that I spend a little more money and replace my 125v single speed pump with a new energy efficient 230v variable speed pump. After I got my first summer bills I was kicking myself for not doing it when he first told me.
I have PG&E for electricity and my bill dropped over $1300/yr while running the pool the same amount of time. I could have been saving money longer if I had listened to Mike a few years earlier and replaced my 125v Wachanga single speed pump. Mike, thanks for taking care of our pool so well all these years!

All around great service! Let me begin with how I searched for a pool specialist- google, yelp, reading reviews, doing my due diligence, as I hate wasting my time with bad contractors and even worse, getting sub-par work & Ritz Carlton prices. Mike had the best response time, communicated all the way up to his arrival, and was clear about his service charge. Honestly, I read other reviews and feel the "bad" reviews given have no solid ground.of course there's a $75 service charge, which gets applied towards the cost of any repair.what throws people off by this?
